‘Daytona Pepsi 400’ NASCAR Pace Car
Chassis Number: 1G2WP1213WF240557
In 1998 the Pontiac Wide Track Grand Prix was the official Pace Car of NASCAR’s 50th Anniversary season. The Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway was a midsummer tradition since the track opened in 1959. With NASCAR celebrating its 50th anniversary in 1998 the Pepsi 400 would enter a new era as “Daytona at the Speed of Light” with the event being held under lights for the 1st time ever.
1998 was the 1st, and to date, only NASCAR Season to have back to back restrictor plate races, with the Pepsi 400 being run after the Winston 500. Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports took his eleventh win of the season and retained his point lead on the way to his third Winston Cup championship title. This car is one of the pace cars used on track during this milestone NASCAR event.
